Meet Kyle of DREGER Baseball

“Baseball, and pitching specifically, taught me so much about battling through adversity, controlling what you can control, and to make sure I kept positive when the game doesn’t feel like that all the time.”

I grew up in Manitowoc, WI. From a very early age, sports became the main focus. Whether it was a school project where I would choose to write my report on Ken Griffey Jr. or some Wisconsin sports team, to watching games at home to do the “book” in a notebook, baseball was always the sport I thought about the most.

While I played (and enjoyed) football and basketball all the way through high school, baseball was my go-to. In baseball, I always loved the grind of batting practice, taking ground balls and whatever else was part of a practice plan. There was just something special about baseball from very early on for me. And while hitting was always fun, I enjoyed pitching even more. The ability to control and affect the game so deeply as a pitcher, and the overall “one on one” battle it creates, made it my favorite part. But it wasn’t always perfect. Baseball, and pitching specifically, taught me so much about battling through adversity, controlling what you can control, and to make sure I kept positive when the game doesn’t feel like that all the time. Even now, as a parent and coach myself, I use the skills I learned throughout my playing career in baseball!

After high school I got a scholarship to go play college baseball in Kansas City, before finishing out my collegiate career at Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI. I played first base and third base as a fielder, but also continued to pitch. As a Viterbo V-Hawk, I won an Honorable Mention All-Conference award and a gold glove award for my play at 3rd Base. I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to be a dual-player all through college! It’s such a beautifully challenging sport, it requires a different level of skill and focus, and it teaches you to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

Now that I’m done playing, I truly enjoy coaching. I am the head coach for my son Miles’ baseball team in the Bloomington Bandits program, and I’m also involved with the Bloomington Blast Fastpitch softball program for my daughter Marlayna. I take my role as a coach very seriously. It’s up to us to make sports fun for the kids and get them better. But, we also get the opportunity to teach them how to be good little humans and gain life skills. I want to make sure kids want to come back each year to keep playing! And if coaching wasn’t enough, I am also in Coach/Player Development positions on the board for both programs too. Sports have given me so much, and I want to spend my time giving back to these programs to make the sports experience the best it can be for my kids, and their teammates.

I started DREGER Baseball to create more opportunities for the kids I see around ball fields all summer to get better at pitching. I have a passion to help make kids better at baseball, and to help where I can in their journey to play for as long as they want to, and to enjoy playing more and more every year. Pitching is one of, if not the most important skilled position on the diamond. And I believe I have an eye for the mechanics and an understanding of how a pitching delivery should go. I pitched a lot throughout my life and never had arm troubles. I believe there is a way to combine a safer pitching delivery with a focus on performance, so players can get better, throw harder and more consistent, while also being able to stay on the field and be healthy.

Day to day I am the managing attorney of the Gerald Miller Law Firm, a criminal defense firm based out of Minneapolis. In addition to managing the associate attorneys in the firm, I handle my own case load too. I represent clients facing all sorts of challenges throughout the state of Minnesota ranging from DWI, to assault, to drug, to other various serious felonies. I went to law school at the University of St. Thomas Law School in downtown Minneapolis and graduated in 2014. Me and my wife, Abby, have been living in Bloomington since 2013. And in 2015 our first house in Bloomington was on House Hunters! The episode was called “Fancy vs. Frugal.”
